William Doxford               1812-1882
William was born on 1 March 1812, the son of Joseph Doxford and Elizabeth Chapman. He married Hannah Pile on 23 April 1834. He began building little wood ships in 1840, at Cox Green. In 1857, he came down stream to Pallion where he began operation on a much larger scale. In 1870, a larger site was purchased and five births were laid down. Two years after starting operations at the new site, he received his first Admiralty order, for three composite auxiliary steam gunboats. They proved most satisfactory, and in 1875 a naval order  was  received  for  the  construction  of  the  composite screw corvette Magician. By this time his two elder sons - William Theodore and Alfred, had joined their father in partnership. In 1880, the younger sons, Robert and Charles also came to the firm. Robert, as an engineer who had served apprenticeship under Sir William Allan, at the Scotia Works. In the next generation, more Doxfords came into the business. He died on 26 April 1882, and is buried in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery.   William and Hannah Doxford
