The Chico Enterprise, Wednesday, February 18, 1942
Nathaniel Bruce, Life-Long Chico Resident, Passes.
Nathaniel Hawkins Bruce, 75, widely known and highly respected resident of Chico all his life, died last evening at his home on West Eighth avenue. -- Bruce was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bruce. His father was born in Alsace-Lorraine, France, and his grandfather, William Bruce, served under Napoleon, as one of his bodyguards. In 1854 John Bruce and his family came to California, crossing the plains with oxen and big wagons. Upon arriving in this state they settled in Butte county, engaging in mining on Feather river until he located a homestead on the Humboldt road, three miles east of Chico. This was the birthplace of Nathaniel Bruce, who was born in 1866. Bruce married Miss Ellen Stephens and on November 5 of last year [1941] celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Bruce for the past 33 years had resided on Eighth avenue and had been interested in ranching and an extensive orchard. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World of Chico. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ellen Bruce; a son, Evert A. Bruce of Chico; a sister, Mrs. Nancy Williams of Chico; a brother, Robert Bruce of Chico, and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to attend funeral services Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Nugent Funeral chapel. Rev. Harris Pillsbury of the Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian church, will officiate at the services. Interment will follow in the family plot of the Chico cemetery."
